Gravitational Waves from Binary Inspiral

• black-hole and neutron-star binary systems  are the best understood burst source.
• sound theoretical predictions for the waveforms for the inspiral are available.
• only the waves from the last minutes or seconds before the system coalesces are measurable with LIGO.
• we  expect a strong gravitational waves signal from the coalescence, but there is no theoretical model for this yet.
