Finn Advice

Hi,

Here are the comments and suggestions from Sam as per our meeting at the APS Conference in Long Beach CA.

  1. Stability. This is an issue provided that not all platforms seem to be equally stable when running LINUX. Specially the combination of motherboard + BIOS should be considered. The only way to address this is experimentally (or gathering info from other users -my comment-).
  2. A thorough conversation with Kent Blackburn and A. Lazzarini should take place. issues: it seems that the max optimization that will be required is O2 and no more than that. i.e. the system that we want should top at that level of optimization.
  3. some comments regarding the queen: the queen should not be just another node. It should be capable of some improvements: i.e. 100 Gb of HD (5 HD, not necessarily an array), also more RAM (2 MB). Also we may want it to have a dual port connection (2 eth.)
  4. we may also want to have a data conditioning unit. LDAS is evolving, i.e. most processing would require a 4 processor box, 1Gb RAM, 2 MB cache p/proc (!)
  5. we need to find out , also talking to Kent and ALbert if we need 256K or 512K for RAM.
  6. he thinks definitely that starting with a prototype first (i.e. test stability, heating, etc...) before purchasing everything is a good idea.
  7. dusting and filtering (similar to comments by Bruce: be sure that we plan for dusting and we don't have to go evry other day to remove dust from the components...)
  8. switching (this is my own question, now). Are we sure our option is optimal?
regards, mario
